STARGRUNT at Lincombe Barn

Here's some pics of a Stargrunt game at Lincombe Barn Wargames Society, July 2019. We used my friend Owen's armies: New Anglican Marines defending an outpost attacked by Federal States Europa Foreign Legion.I brought some jungle and scratch-built hard cover. Stargrunt gives a realistic infantry led game but without a scenario there is an tendency for both sides to take cover and blast away at each other. This is reinforced by the in position rule which gives troops a bonus for 'going to ground' even in cover. The absence of a points system could result in one player taking the mickey. You are reliant on the game host, to either balance the forces, OR create an achievable scenario.

Wow, the colonists have power-washed their domes

NAC Marines entering a built up area. The Legionaires are plodding in from the opposite side. The resin buildings are by Grendel and painted by former member Rob Hooper. The sci fi crates scratch-built by myself from plastic junk.

The battlefield from above: some patches of brush, hills and three compounds. A fair and even scattering of scenery. Plenty o' cover for your grunts and pongoe's to hang out.

NAC Marines find cover amongst some stacked pikes (made from drinking straws) and machinery (..bottle caps again!)

We don't like these brown uniforms - we want field-grey

The FSE have called up some militia - actually a Kurita Machine Gun platoon by FASA.

Some NAC power armour raced into cover leaving the FSE Legionaires in open ground

"INCOMING Sarge!" Legionaires go 'in position' but are still getting the thick of it.

'Scuse me, is this the que for the Festival Portaloos?

FSE Legion mosey on thru a compound of huts, machinery and barrels

Pardon, don' t leave yore troops in the open Leutenant! FSE taking casualties though 'in position.'

The militia have set up a heavy machine gun: dakka...dakka...dakka. Hope they're good shots! (The weird alien jungle I'd bought from Little Green Man /Pop Enterprises)

Eh Corp, did we have to set up by the fuel container?

FSE Legionaires occupy one of the compounds. By their shirt colour I'm guessing these guys are Spanish rather than French. Hard cover makes a good fire-base in this game. Well practically a fortress!

This foliage is too bright Sarge? That's why you have a visor kid

The FSE militiamen have taken cover in some jungle flanking the central compound. That jungle has some very bright foliage. I should've worn sunglasses.

If I recall, we agreed at packing up time that the New Anglicans (Owen) had won this game. Mostly because the NAC's had got to the centre compound first establishing a fire base. I stupidly sacrificed two good squads in the attacking it across open ground. The lessons I learnt from this were as follows. I was tempted into picking a larger force, leaving Owen with the quality army. Also 'reactivation' enabled the FSE to capture the domed compound, which was a dominating terrain feature. A final lesson was that powered armoured troops are very, very, difficult to kill or wound. First time we've used them in Stargrunt and they were like miniature tanks.
