Ships for Star Trek - Full Thrust
![]() |
("Target the engines only." Bird of Prey fires on USS Grissom.)
I bought Full Thrust (FT) for wargaming fleet actions of Star Trek, Star Wars and Babylon 5. The rules work nicely for space opera. And fans have written rules for weapons and stats for the sci fi movies like (Full Thrust Weapons and Defence Archive collated by Noam Isenberg) Miniature wise the cheapest are Micromachines which have been around since the mid nineties and can be bought on Ebay. Recently Wiz Kids games Star Trek Heroclix Tactics and Attack Wing have expanded the range of models available. My models were photographed on an old Starscape cloth by Geo Hex.
For Full Thrust ship stats check out Dean Gundberg aka Star Ranger, Starship Combat News. Another site to Google is is Star Trek Classic Full Thrust. For TNG look up Full Trekkie by Callum Leatham.
Just a quick update on models: buying a copy of Star Fleet Captains boardgame and the expansion Romulan Empire will give you complete fleets which saves time collecting.

"In a different reality, I could have called you friend" Romulan Warbird v. USS Enterprise (MicroMachines)
Warbird
Above the USS Enterprise up against a Romulan Warbird in The Balance of Terror. Some FT players maintain the warbird is armed with a Wave Gun or Nova Cannon. Based on the aforementioned episode episode where the Enterprise faces a Romulan ship with a cloaking devise and powerful plasma bolt.
Rules for cloaking devices vary, some players simply have them as extra shields. We tried them by placing a ship marker and removing the model when the ship cloaks. The player then continues writing their orders. When they de-cloak the model is placed then all the movement orders are executed. Sometimes the warbird is in an excellent firing position, sometimes nearly off the table facing the wrong way.

Surrounded by Stormbirds - The Enterprise Incident
Stormbird
Lend-lease Klingon D7 Cruisers the Romulans were called Stormbirds. Here they have surrounded the Enterprise in homage to the episode The Enterprise Incident. The Klingons acquired cloaking devices in exchange for D7's. The next Romulan ship we see isn't for another fifty years in The Next Generation

Klingon D7 Cruiser (by Micromachines)
The D7 is a cruiser though labelled a battlecruiser by the Tv model makers. It uses disrupters as well as phasers and photon torpedoes. Some players have house rules for disrupters e.g. Dean Gundberg aka Star Ranger of Starship Combat News. Just for ease of play I assume disrupters and phasers are different names for weapons which have a similar effect. Ships in this class include IKS Devisor, Gr'oth and Klothos. Episodes we see D7 in are The Trouble with Tribbles, Elaanus of Troyus, Day of the Dove. Notoriously, there were no toilets on Klingon ships: "When's the next pit stop Kolath my back fangs are swimming?" "Only a few more light years Korex"

Constitution Class (Micromachine)
Above a Constitution class heavy cruiser USS Enterprise. Named ships of this class include: USS Cayuga, Constitution, Exeter, Excalibur, Hood, Lexington, Potemkin, Defiant and New Jersey

Simple conversions: USS Saladin and USS Burke
Saladin class Destroyer: this conversion was made from a Constitution class saucer, neck and nacelle. Burke class Frigate, this approximate conversion is from a Constitution class saucer and two nacelles. There were lots more TOS and Movie era ships added by FASA's Star Fleet Battles (1979) wargame.
THE MOVIES

Bird of Prey, K'Vort class, (Micromachines)
There are two sizes of this ship the B'Rel which is an escort class with a dozen crew, can enter an atmosphere and land planet-side. And the larger K'Vort which is a cruiser sized ship with 300 crew. Making use of cloaking device exchanged with the Romulans for spacecraft. It is used from Star Trek III throughout the movies into Next Generation and in DS9. The Undiscovered Country General Kang's has one with a prototype which enables the ship to fire when cloaked (you're on your own for rules for that!)

A squadron of K'tinga's (WizKids)
K'tinga
The replacement for the D7. It is seen in Star Trek I, Wrath of Khan and close up in The Undiscovered Country. Ships in the class include Kronos One, Klothos, B'moth, G'roth and T'Ong. Only big difference in the model from the D7 is added hull detail. It is armed with phasers, disrupters and photon torpedoes. It also has a second photon torpedo tube firing aft.

USS Grissom (by Micromachines)
Oberth Class
This was used as a scoutship and science vessel in the Movies. The USS Grissom is destroyed by Cmdr Kruge's Bird of Prey in The Search for Spock. And in TNG it is used as a Federation supply ship and a civilian freighter (SS Visko). The Micromachine USS Grissom model is larger than the Wizkids models USS Yosemite and USS Pegasus

USS Excelsior (by Micromachines)
Excelsior Class
This is the super ship in Search for Spock and The Undiscovered Country. We also see the Enterprise B (see below) in Star Trek Generations. It is a ship of the line in TNG and continues on in DS9. Wizkids do the USS Hood, Lakota and Fearless
![]() |
USS Reliant (Micromachine) "From hell's heart I stab at thee, "for hates sake I spit my last breath at thee" Khan on Kirk
Miranda class
Khan hijacks the cruiser USS Reliant in The Wrath of Khan and we see The USS Saratoga in The Voyage Home. Miranda classes are in battles with the Borg at Wolf 359 and Battle of Sector 001. In DS9 they served in the Dominion Wars. The USS Lantry was a supply ship. Micromachines did models for Miranda and Saratoga the latter is hard to get hold of.

Constitution II: USS Enterprise A (Micromachines)
USS Enterprise A (Constitution refit.) this is the ship for the movie era. It was going to be decomissioned in Search for Spock. Destroyed at Genesis planet another Constitution was refitted and given the title Enterprise for Kirk in The Journey Home.

Excelsior class: USS Enterprise B (Micromachine)
Seen in the movie Star Trek Generations film this ship of the line is also a regular in TNG episodes. The Enterprise B model had a modified cargo hold at the rear of the saucer and fins running from the deflector shield.

USS Stargazer (a repainted Micromachine)
Soyuz Class
The Soyuz class USS Stargazer was Picard's first ship. It out fought a Ferengi Marauder (the Battle of Maxia.) WizKids do a model of the USS Hathaway.

Galaxy Class: USS Enterprise D (WizKids)
Galaxy Class
The Micromachines model is rather small, the WizKids model is a better scale Enterprise
![]() |
Ambassador class: Enterprise C (Micromachine)
Ambassador Class
The predecessor to the Galaxy class it appears in the TNG episode Yesterday's Enterprise which is an alternative timeline episode about a Klingon - Federation war.

Still in service: Miranda, Excelsior and Oberth classes
Presumably because of budget it was easier for the props department to reuse models from the 80's movies. Which is good for wargamers too as we need lots of ships when a Borg cube turns up.
Romulan ships:

D'Deridex class Warbird (by Micromachnes)
D'Deridex Warbird
First seen in the TNG episode The Nuetral Zone. When the Romulans appear on the border to challenge the Enterprise D investigating destroyed outposts. In TNG the Federation and Romulans engage in a Cold War the latter taking on the role of aggressors. These ships fought in the Dominion War and agaisn't the Borg. Ships commissioned include: Belak, Devoras, Haakana and Khazara. The model by Micromachines and Wizkids are the same size.
![]() |
Pi - a Romulan scout ship (Micomachine)
Romulan Scout
Seen in the episodes The Enemy and the Defector. A small vessel used alternatively as a scout or science model. The Micromachine model (above) is oversized, the Wizkid's is closer to scale. The science ship seen in The Next Phase is a scout model with a modified bridge.
Klingon ships:

Vorcha by WizKids
Vor'cha
The Vorcha replaces the K'tinga as the mainstay of the Klingon Defence Force and is roughly equivalent to the Galaxy class. Gowron has one as his flagship in the Klingon Civil War. The Micromachine has a smaller nose than the Wizkids model.
![]() |
Ka Vort class Bird of Brey
Bird of Prey
The Ka'Vort and B'rel are still in service with the Klingon military and noble houses e.g. Duras faction in the Klingon Civil War.

Negh Var (by Wizkids)
Negh Var
This is the Klingon flagship in DS9 and has the power of a battlecruiser. We see two the Negh'Var and Regency One. Towards the end of the production line Wiz Kids started painting their ships metalic, which is annoying.
Cardassian Warship

Galor class Warship (Micromachines)
In DS9 the Galor Class Warships fought the Romulans, Klingons, Dominion and suppressed the Bajoran resistance.
